Exploring the Chosen One Trope

Chosen Ones cover

Apr 09, 2020

If you're anything like me, you enjoy a good Chosen One trope. You know the stories - one girl in all the world destined to fight the vampires and demons, a gang of girls fighting evil by moonlight, a young boy who is destined to defeat He Who Must Not be Named, a group of kids from summer camp destined to save the digital world, and all the rest. I've consumed a lot of chosen one stories from books, television, and movies, but what I've only recently started exploring are the other aspects of the chosen one trope. What happens when the chosen one has defeated the evil force, what about the people who aren't chosen or who are chosen by mistake?

Some of the books in this list are funny and lighthearted while others explore the dark aspects of chosen ones being thrown into battle, like PSTD and depression. They'll make you think about the chosen one stories that you know and love, what it means to be a hero, and what happens after...

I hope you enjoy this list - let me know what your favourite chosen one stories are in the comments.

All of the books on this list explore the chosen one trope. What happens after the chosen one(s) has accomplished her/his/their destiny, what about the people around the chosen one, what if you were chosen by mistake?

Alice as Chosen One

Great post, & suggested readings! Would you consider Alice from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as an early, if not unusual, example of a Chosen One...?
