Metcalfe village branch of Ottawa Public Library will move to Metcalfe Town Hall next year

Sep 03, 2021

The Metcalfe village branch of Ottawa Public Library will move next year to the old Metcalfe Town Hall, down the road from the current location. Contactless holds pickup and returns service will continue at the current location -- Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm until the new location is ready, expected in spring 2022.

The facility currently housing Ottawa Public Library's Metcalfe village branch, at 2782 8th Line, has major structural issues that make it unusable for library purposes. The former Metcalfe Town Hall, located at 8243 Victoria Street, has been secured as a nearby alternative location to ensure continued library services in the community.

Renovation work, originally slated for spring 2021, was delayed due to provincial construction shutdowns. Construction at the Metcalfe Town Hall location will begin this fall.

The Metcalfe Town Hall will be renovated to ensure it meets building code, life safety, and accessibility requirements. These renovations will be a long-term investment in the building that will serve the community well beyond use by the library. Library furniture will be as mobile as possible so it can be moved to accommodate periodic community events that may take place at the Metcalfe Town Hall while the Library branch is located there.

Next year’s move to the Metcalfe Town Hall location will locate Library services alongside City services in one convenient location for OPL customers and all residents who would like to use the Metcalfe village branch.

Once in the Town Hall location next spring, OPL will study the optimal long-term solution for the Metcalfe village branch.

Hours and location of all OPL branches are available at on OPL’s website:  https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/branch/metcalfe-village
